A wonderful book tackling issues about slavery from the view point of a well known character in the american literature.

The author used great techniques such as dreams and accents to distinguish ideas and people in that time of age. One of our members confirmed that the contents the author describes are very real because they had lived them from the other side when they were little.

The issues we had with the book were that:

  • it ended very abrubtly leaving us with more questions or unsatisfied with how the character ended up where they were.
  • the declaration of the character James having Huckleberry Finn as his son was a last minute option to excuse his motive on saving them. We believe if this scene was removed the story would have been better.

Overall, it was a great read for most people of the group that gave us a newfound point of view on slavery and its brutal and dark history.

(P.S. We also found out this book will be made into a movie by Steven Spielberg)
